Prediction Instructions

Need help? Here are ten tips on how to perform your research.

Introduction

  • Only a team captain may cast votes. Click the “Predictions” tab in the site navigation menu and it will take you to the list of prediction opportunities (p-opps).
  • There are two types of p-opps for which Team Captains will be able to submit predictions:
    • Merits cases
    • Petitions for certiorari
  • The pick submission deadline is March 31, 2014.

Merits Predictions

  • Principal Winner – Captain must select either “Petitioner” or “Respondent”
  • # of Justices supporting the result – Captain must select a number between 5-9.  *If a Justice files a separate, concurring opinion, that Justice will be counted for scoring purposes as having supported the result.
  • Individual Justice positions – Captain must select either “Affirm”, “Reverse/Vacate”, or “Affirm/Reverse in part”.
  • Once predictions have been entered, press the blue “Submit your prediction” button at the bottom of the page to save your votes. Predictions will not be locked into place until voting has closed and Captains may come back as much as they like over the course of the voting period to change/input their votes. Once the voting period for that prediction has closed, votes will be locked into place and team scores will be calculated using those votes.

Cert. Predictions

  • Select an option
    • Captain must choose one of the following from the drop down menu:
      • Granted
      • Denied
      • CVSG (Call for the Views of the Solicitor General)
      • Summarily Reversed
      • Held
    • Once the selection has been made, press the blue “Submit your prediction” button to save your prediction. Like merits case votes, cert. predictions will not be locked into place until the close of the voting period. The Team Captain may change the team’s cert. prediction at any time up until the cut-off day for submissions.
    • Please refer to the “Competition Rules” link located in the Team Manager widget for specific information on how scores are calculated.

Tie Breaker Question

  • Each student team will make a prediction as to the number of days after argument that an opinion will be rendered for the first case decided out of the six merits cases that are part of the competition. In the event of a tie, the student team whose prediction is closest to the actual number of days between the argument and the day the opinion is rendered, including the date of argument and date the opinion is rendered, will win the competition.
